JP Duminy The All rounder

It was pretty cool for the Proteas to start the tour of Bangladesh with a convincing win. Actually everyone in the team contributed to the win.

The stand out performer was the veterans in Faf with the bat and JP with the ball.

For a T20 game, JP did not do bad with the bat as well, as his 18 runs added to give SA a decent total and he did score the 3rd highest total for the Proteas on the day. His bowling figures were more impressive though. 2 wickets for 11 runs was pretty impressive in just 4 overs. Talk about strangling the Bangladeshis at what they do best playing spin.

The Proteas selectors will probably be smiling and thinking JP Duminy is finally relishing at the role of being an all rounder in the team.

In the limited overs cricket he is the only South African in the top 10 all-rounders in ODI and T20 with position 8 and 9 respectively world wide.

Before the South African selectors can be proud, remember before Ryan McLaren was dropped he was also in the top 10 in ODI cricket all-rounders list.

What is more astonishing in 50 overs cricket AB de Villiers has a better bowling average at 27% while JP has an average of 40%. It maybe wrong to compare the 2 as AB de Villiers has only bowled in 8 matches while JP Duminy has bowled in 91 matches. Than again with the little success that AB has gotten in 50 overs cricket it would make sense for him to also explore T20 cricket as a part-time bowler. Enough about AB.

JP Duminy with 91 matches bowling experience in 50 overs cricket, it is about time he stepped up and be the bowler the selectors want him to be without losing his batting ability.

Maybe JP's role of being an all-rounder has confused his batting ability in Test cricket as he is ranked number 68 in Test cricket and even Vernon Philander is ranked higher than JP. In ODI cricket JP is the 6th best South African batsman at number 33 world wide. What can be reassuring is that in T20 cricket he is South Africa's 2nd best batsman and 12th world wide.

JP Duminy the all-rounder or JP Duminy the finisher or JP Duminy the part-time spin bowler with a lot of overs under his belt. It is pretty confusing to exactly know what his role is in the team as he is not excelling to his full potential but the bowling performance in Dhaka was exceptional. With such bowling spells we hope his batting improves as well especially if South Africa are to win the world cup in 4 years time or even the T20 world cup next year.

Catch the Proteas next match against Bangladesh on Tuesday at 9am.
