First Time Since 2008
05 | 01 | 16
South Africa in the Newlands witnessed for the first time since 2008 that the Proteas have fielded more than 1 black player in the South African Test squad.
Due to an injury to Dale Steyn meant that South African cricket selectors had to pick Kagiso Rabada who was absent in the match in Durban. As for Temba Bavuma he did not set the world cricket alight but in 2015 he was no near being the worst batsman in the team. That meant when a batsman needed to be axed he was able to avoid the axe. JP Duminy was the batsman that got the chop meaning he could not play in front of his home crowed.
Lets go back to 2008 in Bangladesh. That match had Makhaya Ntini and Monde Zondeki in the team. Makhaya got 6 wickets in the match and Monde got 3 wickets helping South Africa win by an innings and 48 runs.
Since than this is the first time there is no Makhaya Ntini as one of the 2 black Test players in the squad. Makhaya has been accompanied by 3 players in Mfuneki Ngam, Monde Zondeki and Thami Tsolekile in the Test playing 11.
Back to the Newlands Test match, day 4 will commence today (05 - 01 - '16). Kagiso (KG) and Temba have already combined on the wicket of Neil Compton when the English batsman pulled Kagiso but he was caught by Temba. So far Temba is yet to get a chance to contribute with the bat but his has that one catch. Kagiso has 3 wickets the most by anyone in the match so far and had AB de Villiers not dropped his catch he would have 4 wickets in his name.
Merit selection or not, transformation selection or not these 2 Highveld Lions players have done well so far compared to their white teammates.
