Vuvuzela (part 1)

20/04/10

Did you know Vuvuzela.co.za is owned by a white person and am sure they do not know the history of the product?

According to most people the Vuvuzela was established during the FIFA Confederation Cup, when world number one team, Spain, publicly said they want the Vuvuzela to be banned.

Everyone was going on about this Vuvuzela, sadly no one cared about who first started blowing this horn at soccer games. Only thing I see commercially is the Vuvuzela being part of the South African Sporting Culture, hmmmmm. Can't help but ask myself, "has the World Cup Local Organizing Committee (LOC) failed its people?" Am sure if it was white people blowing it, they would be endorsed for making this brand world renowned. The same committee even had a meeting to see if they can ban the Vuvuzela from the world cup.

I remember at the start of the decade when Chiefs had the terrible twins Jabu Pule (Mahlangu) and Staton Fredricks during the countries biggest derby (Chiefs vs Pirates). The Vuvuzela was still new and only a few people had them. It made an interesting atmospheric noise, you knew the team would give it their all, unlike these days. The point of taking this back is, the Vuvuzela did not start during the Confederation Cup, it has a history and that history should be broadcasted for the whole world to know. Those that deserve to be paid their worth for the Vuvuzela should be paid (royalties) or since they are black they should at least be acknowledged.

There is even a pop group called La Vuvuzela a very cheesy name if you ask me but they have done their bit to keep the brand alive. From June 11 2010, the VUVUZELA will be at its peak, as it will be amongst the biggest brands during the Worlds biggest tournament. The Vuvuzela will be competing with Bafana Bafana, Nike, Pepsi, McDonald, Adidas and even FIFA for the honor of being the biggest brand for that month. Ask your self how much money has these "various" people made out of manufacturing the Vuvuzela.

Some of the greatest inventions were created by mistake like potato chips and few people know who made these incredible mistakes. Did you know chips that you eat today from the big brands like Simba, Lays and etc were invented by black man but no one knows him today. I am tired of seeing black (African) initiated brands going unnoticed.

Checkout part 2 (How can Bafana Bafana benefit from the Vuvuzela?)
